Intel Core i5-13600K: Better value than Ryzen 5 7600X? Yes and no

Audio encoding

The Intel Core i5-13600K processor gives the impression of being from a slightly different class than the Ryzen 5 7600X. AMD’s Raphael with only 6 cores against 14 cores (albeit eight of them only small, Gracemont) of Raptor Lake may look like an underdog that should be significantly cheaper. However, one must be careful when making judgments. Although the Ci5-13600K is a great processor, so is the still only Ryzen 5 7000 in the game so far.

Audio encoding

Test environment: Audio encoding is done using command line encoders, we measure the time it takes for the conversion to finish. The same 42-minute long 16-bit WAV file (stereo) with 44.1 kHz is always used (Love Over Gold by Dire Straits album rip in a single audio file).

Encoder settings are selected to achieve maximum or near maximum compression. The bitrate is relatively high, with the exception of lossless FLAC of about 200 kb/s.

Note: These tests measure single-thread performance.

FLAC: reference encoder 1.3.2, 64-bit build. Launch options: flac.exe -s -8 -m -e -p -f

MP3: encoder lame3.100.1, 64-bit build (Intel 19 Compiler) from RareWares. Launch options: lame.exe -S -V 0 -q 0

AAC: uses Apple QuickTime libraries, invoked through the application from the command line, QAAC 2.72, 64-bit build, Intel 19 Compiler (does not require installation of the whole Apple package). Launch options: qaac64.exe -V 100 -s -q 2

Opus: reference encoder 1.3.1, Launch options: opusenc.exe –comp 10 –quiet –vbr –bitrate 192

Intel Laminar RM2 & Laminar RH2: New stock coolers for Arrow Lake

Yesterday, Intel released 65W “non-K” Arrow Lake processors, which represent a cheaper mainstream option for desktops on its new LGA 1851 platform compared to the 125W “K” models that are overclockable and geared more towards enthusiasts. The non-K versions will have one small advantage, a bundled cooler, which can save you some money on the build. For the new generation, these coolers have been given a better and quieter design. Intel axes basic stock cooler bundled with cheapest processors

Perhaps it says something about the state of the desktop PC market: a few years ago, AMD invested in improved stock coolers for the first Ryzen processors, and then Intel did something similar for Alder Lake processors on the LGA 1700 platform. It didn’t last long though, both have since abandoned further improvements and people buying an aftermarket cooler is pretty much assumed. Now, Intel is even killing off its cheapest box cooler. Intel cancels x86S, effort to clean up x86 CPUs legacy cruft

In fall, we reported here that Intel’s Panther Cove CPU architecture coming in two years (not in Panther Lake CPUs though) reportedly adopts an upgrade to the x86 instruction set labeled APX and also the AVX10 SIMD instructions, which are a compromise between AVX-512 and AVX2 designed for hybrid processors. However, the x86S architecture, the third of these awaited ISA innovations, will not be coming. It has in fact been cancelled.
